Piano Recital

Sarah teaches piano to her two cousins, Ariel and Courtney,
who lost their mom a year and a half ago to breast cancer.

We had a recital for them with a lot of the Purcell family on December 30th.

It's great to see them improving and I'm pretty proud of my wife as their teacher.

Way to go girls!

Snowmobiling in West Yellowstone

My parents' Christmas present to our family was a trip up to West Yellowstone to go snowmobiling.  It was a ton of fun and I think all of us had a blast.

Here we are sitting on snowmobiles for the first time.
(Except for my dad, Sarah and me, who are seasoned pros)

A few pictures of us all lined up like sled dogs.
Like I've heard my dad say, "The view is only good for the lead dog."
Unfortunately, we were bringing up the rear.
We were also all very glad when my mom got the courage to go more than 15 mph.

(That or Bryan is really good at running backwards in the snow with a camera.)

Someone said while we were up there that your eyes show if you're smiling.
So, which one of us is smiling?

I especially enjoyed the ride we took in the afternoon, going up into the mountains,
getting to see some of the beauty of nature during the winter.

No snowmobiling adventure pictures would be complete without pictures taken while riding:

I wish we had stopped to take a picture of the pine trees that were frozen along the trail in one spot because they looked really cool, but we didn't.  This blurry one is the closest I got.

I think we would all agree with my dad and give this two thumbs up!
(Even though it's hard to see his thumbs in this picture)

Thanks again Mom and Dad!

Rockin' Rolls Christmas Style

Despite her disapproval with her first attempt at baking rolls,
Sarah decided to make a second attempt while we were down in Vegas for Christmas.

The dough with cream cheese frosting and raspberry jam

Not quite done (the rolls or the smile)

This time she did it with a sweeter twist (no pun intended), making two delicious giant rolls and it appears that she was a little bit more pleased with the results.

Santa Claus is Coming to Town

For Christmas, we gave Sarah's dad, Wes, a Santa Claus outfit complete with hat, beard, white thermal shirt, red pants and suspenders.  I think he really enjoyed the gift, and we all enjoyed sitting on Santa's lap for a photo shoot.

Red Rock

While we were in Vegas for Christmas, we went hiking around Red Rock National Conservation Area.  We had a good time hiking and climbing the different rock formations.

We couldn't decide which pose was better with this rock formation

The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey

For a Christmas-time adventure, Sarah and I went and saw the musical
"The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey"

It was based on the book by Susan Wojcechowski about a carpenter who lost his wife and child and a widow with her son who moved and lost their wooden Christmas nativity.
I don't want to ruin the story for anyone, so I'll leave it at that.

The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey with CD: Gift Edition

The author was there the night we saw the musical, so we bought a copy of the book and had her sign it for us.  Maybe reading this Christmas story will become a tradition with our children which began their parents' first Christmas together.

(For those of you who may recognize the first cover better than the second.)

Flag Football

I had the privilege of coaching Sarah's flag football team this fall, and although we're a little bit past fall, I decided that I should blog about it anyway.

Our team name was "Brenda Bones!" which is a story in and of itself.  Brenda Bones is what my old roommates and I call our friend Brenda.  Brenda asked Robbie to buy a flag football schedule for her so she wouldn't have to get up super early and wait in a really long line because she knew Robbie would already be waiting in that line to buy other schedules (guys' flag football, ultimate, soccer, etc.).  Robbie got his payback when he got to name the team, so he chose to name it "Brenda Bones!" and Brenda never got around to changing it.  So, at the beginning of each game we would hear things such as "Brenda Bones, come check in" or "We'll have Brenda Bones wear the blue flags" which never got old for me to hear and laugh to myself.

We had some growing pains throughout the season, as I tried to implement a new offensive scheme for pretty much every game.  These varied from options to direct snaps to a player in motion to lining everyone up on one side of the center to telling the quarterback to just run to a side and then either throw it or keep running.  Then I made the realization that defense was the difference-maker in girls' flag football.  I believe my first clue was that I saw as many "pick sixes" (interceptions returned for touchdowns) as I saw offensive touchdowns.  So we made some defensive adjustments later in the season.  These adjustments included coaching such as "try to catch the ball or knock it down when the other team throws it rather than waiting for them to catch it and then pulling their flags."  We saw a considerable improvement in our defense, with Sarah proving to be quite effective at knocking down passes.

Despite our 1-4 record in the regular season, we made it into the tournament.  (Or maybe more accurately, because of our 1-4 record in the regular season, we were placed in the lowest of three divisions for the tournament.)  We then went on a wild run and made it to the semifinals.  I couldn't make it to one of the tournament games, but I heard afterwards from Sarah that she had intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown.  To be honest, I had a hard time believing this because although I love my wife, her hand-eye coordination may be a little lacking.  She later admitted to me that she wasn't trying to catch it and that she herself was surprised that she caught it.  At least she knew to run to the end zone after she caught it.

Team Brenda Bones! following the semifinal loss

Although we lost in the semifinals, we had a great time.  Unlike the pizza parties that celebrate the end of a little league football season, we had a breakfast party where we enjoyed all sorts of breakfast foods together and reminisced about our incredible journey.

Thanks again ladies!

Christmas Card 2011

Here is our Christmas Card for 2011:
(The front)
(The Middle)
 (The Back)

We haven't got them yet from Shutterfly, but we may have some extras after sending them to our parents and grandparents, so maybe we'll send one of the extras to our biggest blog fan.
(Except I'm pretty sure my mom will already be getting an actual card, so if the digital version isn't enough for you, leave a comment letting me know and I'll see what I can do for you.)

Rockin' Rolls

As a part of Sarah's initiation into our family, she was given the assignment to make rolls for Thanksgiving.  This was the first time that she had ever made them by herself, and although she wasn't incredibly pleased with how they turned out, we all thought they were delicious.

The first batch or so and Sarah rolling some more dough.

A picture of dough rising is almost as good as a picture of water boiling.

Sarah had so many sheets of rolls that she was using the sink as well.
(Sorry to any family members who might have gotten dish soap in their rolls.)

The finished product.  Sarah wasn't too happy that I took her picture with them because she wasn't proud of how they turned out.  I'm sure she's really happy that her unhappy face is going onto the blog.

And for anyone who was wondering what the Gingerbread Castle looked like on Thanksgiving.
